Arctic char is a cold-water salmonid with vivid coloring. During spawning, develops bright orange or red belly. Reaches weights of 15 kg.
Feeds on crustaceans, insects, mollusks, and small fish. In lakes, the diet is based on gammarus and other crustaceans.
Most active at 2–12 °C. Inhabits Arctic and subarctic waters. Some populations are anadromous (sea-river), others are lake-resident. Active in cold conditions.
Holds in deep cold lakes and Arctic rivers. In large lakes, stays at depth where temperatures are lowest.
Caught on spoons, crankbaits, flies, and cut bait. Spinning and fly fishing. In deep lakes, trolling with a downrigger.
Arctic char is among the most beautiful salmonids. Fishing often requires expeditions to remote Arctic regions. The spawning livery is a spectacular sight.
