Barbel is a powerful river fish identified by its distinctive barbels near the mouth. Elongated body with a strong tail. Reaches weights of 12 kg.
Feeds on larvae, worms, crustaceans, mollusks, and fish roe. Forages on the bottom, turning over stones.
Most active at 14–22 °C. Best bites come in the evening, at night, and at dawn. Most active during dark hours in summer. Feeds well after rain when water becomes slightly colored.
Holds in strong current over rocky substrate, near riffles, and bridge supports. Always faces upstream. Leads a strict bottom-dwelling existence.
Caught on red worm, cheese, crayfish meat, maggots, and pellets. Feeder and leger are the main methods. Feeder weight must hold bottom in the current.
Trophy barbel is one of the hardest fighters among freshwater species. Use strong tackle and avoid forcing the fight in heavy current. Prime time is warm evenings from 8 PM to 2 AM.
