Brook trout is a char species with vivid coloring — red spots circled by blue halos. Reaches weights of 7 kg.
Feeds on insects, larvae, small crustaceans, and fry. In cold habitats, diet is limited to whatever is available.
Most active at 4–16 °C. Requires extremely clean and cold water. Peak activity in spring and autumn. Cannot tolerate temperatures above 20 °C. Spawns in autumn.
Holds in cold mountain streams and spring-fed lakes. Demands the highest water quality among salmonids.
Caught on fly fishing (small flies), ultralight spinning, and worms. Micro-flies (#14–20) and dry flies are the classic method.
Brook trout is an indicator of ecosystem health — its presence means pristine water quality. For targeted fishing, seek the coldest and cleanest tributaries. A beautiful fish worthy of a photo and release.
