Dace is a small, slender freshwater fish of fast-flowing rivers. Reaches weights of 1 kg.
Feeds on insects falling onto the water, larvae, and small invertebrates. An active, swift hunter in upper water layers.
Most active at 10–22 °C. Feeds throughout the warm season. Especially active in wind and rain when insects are blown onto the surface.
Holds on riffles and fast sections of clean-water rivers. Stands in current in small groups.
Caught on maggots, bloodworm, grasshoppers, and small flies. Trotting and fly fishing are the primary methods. Light float and fine tackle.
Dace is ideal for beginners learning fly fishing. Takes flies aggressively and without hesitation. Larger specimens (300+ g) hold in the deeper parts of riffles.
