Grass Carp

Grass carp is a large herbivorous freshwater species originally from East Asia. Has an elongated body with large scales. Reaches 45 kg and 1.5 m in length.

The only large cyprinid that feeds primarily on aquatic vegetation — reeds, elodea, duckweed. Juveniles also consume invertebrates. Can eat more than its own body weight in plants daily.

Most active at water temperatures of 20–28 °C. Virtually stops feeding below 15 °C. Unlike most species, feeds best during hot days. Avoids sudden cold spells.

Found among aquatic weed beds and shallow areas with abundant vegetation. Often detected by characteristic munching sounds near reed beds.

Caught on reed stems, cucumber, sweetcorn, cabbage leaves, and plant-flavored boilies. Float and feeder are the main methods. Bait should be suspended in mid-water or near the surface.

Trophy grass carp hold in large waters with abundant vegetation. Fish during the hottest days. Use a long hooklink and light presentation. Be prepared for an explosive first run.
