Gudgeon (Gobio gobio) is a small, bottom-dwelling freshwater fish easily recognized by its distinctive barbels and mottled coloration. A favorite among coarse anglers and pike fishermen, it typically reaches weights of up to 200 g.
Behavior and Feeding Habits
- Diet: Forages extensively along sandy and gravel bottoms, feeding on small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, and fish eggs.
- Habitat: Holds in energetic shoals on shallow sections with clean sandy or gravel substrate. It prefers clear, flowing waters and is frequently found standing in fast riffles.
- Activity: Most active at water temperatures between 10–22 °C. It feeds consistently throughout the warm season during daylight hours and remains largely unaffected by changing weather conditions.
Best Fishing Methods and Live Bait Strategy
- Effective Baits: Highly responsive to bloodworms, chopped worm pieces, and small maggots.
- Tackle Setup: Light float fishing gear equipped with a small hook. The bait must be presented directly on or dragging along the bottom.
- Live Bait Fishing: Widely regarded as exceptional live bait for predatory fish like pike, perch, and zander. To quickly catch live bait, simply groundbait a shallow sandy area and fish with bloodworms. Gudgeon is exceptionally hardy and survives significantly longer in a bait bucket than most other baitfish species.
