Huchen (Danube salmon) is the largest salmonid in Europe, endemic to the Danube basin. Reaches 60 kg and 1.5 m in length.

A committed predator. Feeds on fish, occasionally rodents and waterfowl. Large specimens are the apex predators of river ecosystems.

Most active at 4–14 °C. A cold-water species. Best fishing in late autumn and early spring. Spawns in spring at 6–9 °C.

Holds in deep pools on large mountain and foothill rivers with clean water and strong current. Highly territorial.

Caught on *large spoons, crankbaits (15–25 cm), and streamers*. Heavy spinning is the main method. Fly fishing with streamers for experienced anglers.

Huchen is extremely rare and legally protected. Fishing is only possible with special licenses in select regions. Catch-and-release is mandatory. One of the most prestigious European trophies.
