Ide is a stout freshwater species with a thick body and fine scales. Reaches weights of 8 kg.
Omnivorous: insects, worms, mollusks, algae, plant seeds, and fry. Diet varies significantly with season and available forage.
Most active at 10–22 °C. Spring feeding begins among the earliest for cyprinids. Feeds throughout the warm season. Responds well to rising water levels and warming conditions.
Holds near moderate current alongside weed beds, undercut banks, and tributary mouths. Small shoals patrol areas with varied bottom structure.
Caught on worm, maggots, grasshopper, fry, small spinners, and crankbaits. Float, feeder, and light spinning. Animal baits work best in spring, insects in summer.
Trophy ide (3+ kg) is a cautious, clever fish. Target large rivers near weed beds. Spring feeding period (April) is the prime window. Wet flies on a fly rod can be highly effective.
