Perch is a widespread predator with distinctive dark vertical bars and red lower fins. Reaches weights of 5 kg.
A pack hunter. Feeds on fry, insects, worms, and crayfish. Hunts cooperatively, driving baitfish shoals to the surface (known as the 'perch boil').
Most active at 8–22 °C. Feeds year-round, including through ice. Autumn frenzy (September–November) is the prime period. First cold snaps and dropping temperatures in autumn trigger intense feeding. Active throughout the day.
Holds near snags, rocks, underwater mounds, and weed edges. Small fish form large schools; big perch hold in small groups or alone.
Caught on soft plastics, spinners (inline and spoons), crankbaits, red worm, and live bait. Spinning, drop-shot, float, and winter ice jig and balance jig.
For trophy perch (1+ kg): larger soft plastics (7–10 cm), slow bottom retrieves, and deep areas with snags. Drop-shot rig is one of the most effective presentations for big perch.
