Sabrefish

Sabrefish

Sabrefish (ziege) is an elongated pelagic freshwater fish with a distinctive curved body shape. Reaches weights of 2 kg.

A predatory cyprinid. Feeds on fry, insects, and crustaceans. Hunts in upper and mid-water layers.

Most active at 14–24 °C. Spring feeding during spawning migration is the prime window. Active in warm sunny weather. Feeds throughout the day.

Holds in large shoals in open water. Migrates upstream for spawning. In large rivers, stays in the main current.

Caught on maggots, fry, small spinners, flies, and streamers. Trotting and sbirulino (bombarda) are the most effective methods. Micro-jigging with spinning also works well.

During the spring run, sabrefish can be caught in large numbers. Locate shoals in the current. A bombarda with maggots on a long hooklink (1.5–2 m) is among the best approaches.
