Sterlet

Sterlet is the smallest sturgeon species with a distinctive pointed snout and rows of bony scutes. Reaches weights of 16 kg.

Feeds on insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and mollusks. Locates food on the bottom using sensitive barbels.

Most active at 10–20 °C. Feeds throughout the warm season. Peak activity in spring after spawning and in autumn. Stays deep.

Holds in deep sections of large rivers with sandy or gravel substrate and moderate current. Migrates upstream for spawning.

Caught on red worm, maggots, and larvae. Leger is the main method. Bait must rest on the bottom in current.

Sterlet is a protected species in many regions. Check local regulations before fishing. Where permitted, fish deep channel sections. Handle carefully during release — avoid touching gills.
