Sturgeon is an ancient, large fish with rows of bony scutes instead of scales. Among the oldest fish species on Earth. Reaches 200 kg and more.
Feeds on mollusks, worms, crustaceans, and small fish. Locates food on the bottom using barbels and a sensitive snout.
Most active at 10–20 °C. Some species are anadromous — migrating from sea to rivers for spawning. Can live over 100 years.
Holds in deep sections of major rivers and seas. During spawning migrations, travels hundreds of kilometers upstream.
Wild sturgeon fishing is banned virtually everywhere due to critical population status. Legal fishing is only possible at specially stocked commercial fisheries.
At stocked waters, caught on pellets, red worm, sweetcorn, and specialized sturgeon boilies. Bottom rigs. Handle carefully during release — never hold by the gills.
