Tench

General Characteristics and Habitat

  • Species Overview: The tench is an olive-green freshwater fish featuring tiny scales and a robust, mucus-covered body capable of reaching weights up to 7 kg.
  • Habitat Preferences: Thrives in dense weed beds, silty bays, and quiet ponds. It strictly avoids open areas and strong currents, remaining highly sedentary within a small home territory.

Feeding Habits and Behavior

  • Natural Diet: Forages primarily on worms, mollusks, larvae, and crustaceans by rooting through bottom silt.
  • Temperature & Activity: Most active within a water temperature range of 18–26 °C. As a dawn feeder, peak activity occurs at first light.
  • Seasonal Behavior: Being warmth-loving, it only feeds actively after consistent water warming and enters winter dormancy by burying into the mud.
  • Detection: Its presence while foraging is easily betrayed by ascending chains of bubbles on the surface.

Angling and Fishing Tactics

  • Effective Baits: Best caught using red worm, maggots, sweetcorn, and vanilla-flavored dough.
  • Core Technique: Float fishing is the primary method, with the bait positioned to rest on or just above the bottom.
  • Targeting Trophy Tench:
    • For specimens of 3+ kg, pre-bait a selected spot near weed beds for several days.
    • Optimal fishing hours are from 4–7 AM.
    • Look for chains of tiny bubbles indicating the fish has arrived, and execute the strike only after a confident pull.
