Vimba (zanthe) is a migratory freshwater species with a distinctive elongated snout. Reaches weights of 3 kg.
Feeds on insect larvae, worms, mollusks, and algae. Forages on the bottom, often in current.
Most active at 10–20 °C. Migrates from large waters into rivers for spawning in spring. The spring run is the prime fishing period. Males darken during the breeding season.
Holds in current over gravel or rocky substrate. During migration, moves upstream in large shoals.
Caught on maggots, worm, bloodworm, and dough. Trotting with a float is the main method. Bait delivery must be precise along the bottom in current.
Vimba is a prized catch. During the spring run, target gravel riffles. The bait retrieve should be slow and as close to the bottom as possible.
