Weatherfish (weather loach) is a bottom-dwelling, snake-like fish that reacts to barometric pressure changes. Has an elongated body with fine scales and barbels. Reaches weights of 200 g.
Feeds on worms, larvae, small mollusks, and detritus. Forages on muddy bottoms.
Most active at 10–22 °C. Becomes extraordinarily active before storms — rises to the surface and thrashes about (hence the name). Can breathe air through its intestine.
Holds on muddy bottoms of still and slow-moving waters, floodplain lakes, ponds, and ditches. Burrows into silt.
Caught on worm pieces, bloodworm, and maggots. Light bottom or float tackle. Bait right on the bottom.
Weatherfish is a natural barometer. Anglers have long used its behavior to predict weather changes. If weatherfish are surfacing en masse — expect a storm.
