Wild Carp (Sazan)

Wild carp (common river carp) is the original form of carp with a streamlined, muscular body and complete scale coverage. Inhabits rivers and large reservoirs. Reaches weights of 20 kg.

Feeds on mollusks, larvae, crustaceans, and aquatic plants. More predatory than pond-raised carp — occasionally takes small fish.

Most active at 16–24 °C. Spring feeding begins earlier than pond carp. Retreats to deep holes in autumn. Responsive to water level and current changes.

Holds in current near sharp depth transitions, behind obstacles that create reverse eddies. Extremely wary and powerful — fights fiercely when hooked.

Caught on worms, sweetcorn, boilies, and freshwater mussel. Feeder and leger rigs with cage feeders are effective. On rivers, matching feeder weight to the current is critical.

For trophy wild carp, fish large rivers near deep holes with current. Use strong tackle (3.5+ lb carbon rod) and large hooks. Prime time is May–June and September.
